From Thesis to Manuscript

We empower our members by strengthening their research skills and promoting exploration in cardiothoracic surgery and its related specialties. Our mentorship extends beyond the study phase, guiding members to refine their work for publication in reputable journals worldwide.

Scoping Reviews

The Research fellowship program is an opportunity for medical students, early career doctors and residents to engage in cutting-edge research within the cardiothoracic surgery field. Fellows work closely with renowned cardiothoracic surgeons and researchers within and outside Africa to design, conduct, and publish innovative studies.

Journal Club

The Journal Club at the Association of Future African Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons is a vibrant platform designed to connect members with cutting-edge research while fostering a collaborative learning environment. Led by a dedicated team of cardiothoracic surgery residents and medical students, our Journal Club plays a pivotal role in advancing knowledge and promoting academic excellence within our community.

Key Activities:
  • Disseminating Knowledge Across Platforms:
Our team leverages various platforms to share cardiothoracic surgery research, visual summaries, and educational content throughout the week. By simplifying complex research findings into digestible formats, we ensure that information is accessible and engaging for our audience.
  • Online Educational Sessions: We frequently host interactive online sessions to educate members on research methodologies, data interpretation, and related topics. These sessions are designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the research process while fostering critical thinking and discussion.
  • Structured Research Evaluation and Presentations: Each member of the Journal Club is assigned specific research publications to evaluate critically. These evaluations are presented during our meetings, encouraging members to analyze findings, question methodologies, and discuss implications. This process not only strengthens participants’ ability to appraise scientific literature but also hones their presentation and communication skills.
  • Building a Collaborative Learning Culture: The Journal Club creates a collaborative environment where medical students and residents work together, sharing insights and learning from each other. This teamwork mirrors the multidisciplinary nature of modern healthcare and prepares members to thrive in professional settings.
  • Highlighting Innovation Through Visual Summaries: Our social media team plays a crucial role in creating visual summaries of significant research findings. These summaries serve as an innovative tool to amplify research visibility and engage a broader audience, including those outside the medical community.

Through these activities, the Journal Club not only enriches its members’ academic journeys but also strengthens the culture of research and education within our organization. By fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and a passion for discovery, we empower the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons to excel in both clinical and academic spheres.
